Chanting the names of the Divine is something that we find in nearly every spiritual tradition. In the spiritual tradition of Bhakti yoga, this practice is called kirtan. In kirtan, the mantras that we chant together leap directly from the spiritual world and awaken our connection to the Supersoul within each of our hearts. When we chant together the experience is amplified way beyond what we can experience when we chant by ourselves.
Whether you’ve been chanting for a while or have newly been hit by kirtan fever, DC Supersonic’s monthly kirtan satsang has something for you. Go deep into the mantras, learn the basics of raga (melody), tala (rhythm) and the kirtan cycle, and explore the philosophy that makes kirtan such a powerful form of meditation. If learning to lead is your goal, you’ll find a melody that works for you, and get a chance to perfect it in an informal setting and supportive community.
Every week will be a mixture of readings, discussion, and plenty of opportunity to chant with friends old and new. Anyone can be in the kirtan - what counts is not how awesome your voice is but the enthusiasm and devotion with which you chant. Join us as we come together to sing, dance, and make music. No experience necessary.
